2016 US Presidential Election

Donald Trump defeated the Democratic candidate, Hillary Clinton, by winning the electoral college, 306 to 232.

Trump ran on an outsider platform, touting his lack of political experience and claiming he was resistant to moneyed interests. He also roused racial animus by regularly engaging in anti-immigrant rhetoric, which boosted his support among white, working class voters in the Midwest, and helped him win several traditionally Democratic states.

Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton faced persistent opposition from within her own party, particularly among young voters who associated her with the class of political elite responsible for the country’s widening economic gap. Her use of a private email server during her time as Secretary of State caused further damage to her reputation.
