Diamond dust glitters in Hokkaido
The Teshio River flows through Shibetsu City in northern Japan's Hokkaido Prefecture. The dynamic river freezes completely every January and thaws all at once in late March with a loud sound. Its winter landscape features iconic white-tailed eagles soaring overhead, and a phenomenon called "diamond dust." Water vapor in the air turns into ice crystals which reflect the sun's rays. They shine in clear and windless weather when the temperature drops below minus 10 degrees Celsius.
