Ancient game of kickball in Kyoto 

In ancient times, members of the noble class would play a game of kickball known as kemari. Though a rare sight these days, it is played at the start of each year at the Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto. Eight people attempt to keep the deerskin ball in the air using only the instep of their right foot. Rather than trying to beat opponents, the aim is to make it as easy as possible for other players to receive it.
