Monkeys gather around bonfire
Monkeys warming up in front of a bonfire is a popular tourist attraction at the Japan Monkey Centre in Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture on weekends. It all began in 1959 when a zookeeper was burning trees that had fallen in a typhoon and the resident monkeys approached the bonfire. A tradition was born and now about 130 Yakushima macaques indigenous to Kagoshima huddle up for warmth on the coldest days.
