Flowers herald a new season of soba

In the mountains of Yamagata Prefecture in northern Japan, a village is welcoming the first signs that the autumn harvest is around the corner. In the Hoya district of Tsuruoka City, white buckwheat flowers sway in the wind. The plants will be harvested and made into the area's famous soba noodles next month.
