The hand that feeds
Residents of the world heritage-listed village Shirakawa-go, in Gifu Prefecture, are committed to preserving an ancient tradition ― planting rice by hand. Each year a group of women dress up as saotome rice planters for a ceremony where they work their way through the fields while singing traditional songs.
