City celebrates Children's Day with annual carp streamer display

To mark Children's Day in Japan, Tochigi City north of Tokyo is hanging more than 1,000 koinobori (carp streamers) over Uzuma River. The annual display, which runs for several weeks, is meant to highlight the old-fashioned charm of the city, which is known for retaining some of the architecture and atmosphere of Japan's Edo Period (1603-1868). The carp, famously strong swimmers, are also a symbol of encouragement to children.
