Snow monsters of Hakkoda Mountains

Roughly 1,300 meters above sea level in Aomori Prefecture's Hakkoda Mountains, wintry winds deposit water droplets onto the branches of pine trees, where they freeze and accumulate, gradually transforming the trees into solid white "snow monsters" up to four meters tall.

The surreal scenery lasts all the way through to late March in particularly cold years.
