Snow monsters emerge in Zao

At wintertime, seasonal winds blowing in from the Japan Sea transform the trees of the Zao mountain range into "snow monsters", or Zao Juhyo. The rime-covered trees are a popular tourist attraction and people from around Japan visit the Zao Onsen Ski Resort in Yamagata Prefecture to ski and snowboard in their midst. The phenomenon typically lasts through February.
