Morning glory, a symbol of summer in Japan

The botanical garden in Fukuoka City in southwestern Japan features 19 kinds of morning glory. The flowering plants were introduced to Japan almost 800 years ago in the Nara period, when envoys brought seeds over from China to use in medicine. Since then they have been embraced by people across Japan as a symbol of the hot summer months.
