Volunteers offer cleanup help to quake survivors

Volunteers with a disaster-relief center in Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture, have been interviewing survivors of the Noto Peninsula earthquake to identify those who need assistance cleaning up their homes.

The New Year's Day temblor damaged more than 15,000 houses in the city, and clearing debris has become a challenge.

The center received about 2,600 requests from residents seeking help with cleaning. But the center's staff assumed that many people were hesitant to ask for assistance because they do not want to inconvenience others.

The volunteers have been going door to door this month to ask people about their needs and offer help. They explained to each resident that they could also assist with clearing debris from warehouses and vacant houses if needed. They encouraged people not to hesitate to ask for help.
