Free car rental for victims and supporters in Ishikawa Pref.

A program to rent cars free of charge to people affected by the Noto Peninsula earthquake has launched in Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture.

The free rental program is an initiative by a car-sharing organization set up in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, after the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011.

Rentals began on January 15. A total of 25 cars, including light trucks, mini cars and vans for up to 10 passengers are available to those who need a vehicle as a result of the quake. Relief organizations are also eligible.

The service operates from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., except Sundays and holidays, and reservations are required by phone or through the organization's website.

There are plans to increase the number of cars to about 200, with depots to be set up in Noto Town and other locations.

Saijo Satomi, executive director of the Japan Car Sharing Association, said, "We will do our best to help those who cannot come to Nanao City by delivering cars, so please contact us with any questions."
