Sakurayama Kyoko has reported extensively on issues related to the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and subsequent accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. She received the Tohoku Press Photographers Association Award for her 2016 documentary on a nursery school in Fukushima struggling with the effects of radiation. She was born and raised in Fukushima Prefecture.
