Oda Makoto is currently based in Tokyo and specializes in Chinese affairs, such as the Hong Kong protest movements. He worked in Beijing as a correspondent for NHK's general bureau for China from 2011 to 2014, where he covered the rights of the Uighur minority and interviewed the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.
