Fire at commercial building in India kills at least 15

A fire at a commercial building in northern India has killed at least 15 people and left 10 with injuries. Authorities are still investigating the cause.

The blaze tore through the three-story building on Monday afternoon in the city of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh state. There were around 40 people inside when it started.

Most of the victims were student trainees at an animation studio on an upper floor. The ground floor housed a pet shop.

Local media say the building didn't have emergency exits or evacuation routes, suggesting poor safety measures may have contributed to the toll.

On a social media account, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the families of the victims. He also pledged financial support to their next of kin.

Authorities have detained four people, including the building's owners.
