Magnitude 5.4 earthquake near Tokyo, no tsunami threat

An earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 5.4 has struck near Tokyo. There is no threat of tsunami.

The quake occurred at 12:12 p.m. on Thursday, Japan time.

Tremors registering four on the Japanese seismic scale of zero to seven were recorded in Isumi City, Ichinomiya Town and other municipalities in Chiba Prefecture.

Tremors registering three were observed in parts of Chiba City, Tokyo and Yokohama City.

Minor tremors were felt across wide regions in the greater Tokyo area and central Japan.

Japan's Meteorological Agency says the quake was focused off the eastern coast of Chiba Prefecture, at a depth of 50 kilometers.
