Poll: Over 70% voters say Biden should not run for president after debate

The latest poll shows that more than 70 percent of US registered voters responded that President Joe Biden should not seek reelection, following a shaky performance in a televised debate before the upcoming presidential election in November.

Biden struggled during Thursday's debate with former President Donald Trump, as he stuttered at times and his voice was hoarse.

CBS News and YouGov conducted a survey on more than 1,100 registered voters for two days after the debate.

The results showed that 72 percent of the respondents said that Biden should not be running for president. The figure is up 9 percentage points from the same poll conducted in February.

The latest poll also found that 46 percent of Democratic registered voters responded that Biden should not run for reelection. Biden is the Democratic Party's presumptive nominee.

The White House says the president is spending Sunday with his family at the Camp David presidential retreat near Washington.

NBC News reported on Saturday that Biden was expected to discuss the future of his reelection campaign with his family. But a White House spokesperson said Sunday's plan had already been made before the debate.

The leading US newspaper, The New York Times, said in an editorial after the debate that Biden should drop out of this year's presidential race.
