Japan to appoint its first female top prosecutor

Japan's Cabinet decided on Friday to appoint the country's first female top prosecutor.

Unemoto Naomi will assume the post of prosecutor general on July 9, replacing Kai Yukio.

Unemoto is currently the head of the Tokyo High Prosecutors Office. She is the first woman to hold the post.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi Yoshimasa told reporters that the personnel affairs of civil servants are decided by considering their personality, expertise and experience.

Hayashi said the Cabinet has concluded that Unemoto is well-suited for the role of prosecutor general.

He also said promoting the advancement of women and ensuring diversity in decision-making processes is crucial, adding that the government will facilitate efforts to recruit and appoint more female civil servants.
