Zelenskyy replaces commander of Ukrainian armed forces

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has replaced the commander overseeing the Ukrainian military's joint forces in the war against Russia.

Zelenskyy announced in a video message on Monday that the post held by Lieutenant General Yuriy Sodol would go to Brigadier General Andriy Hnatov.

Zelenskyy did not give a reason for the replacement, but Ukrainian media reports say some units have been increasingly critical of the heavy losses sustained by the military under Sodol.

The New York Times notes the move follows the dismissal of the highly popular then-commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, in February.

It says Zelenskyy's decisions continue to "threaten military cohesion."

Ukrainians have expressed hope that the personnel shake-up will help improve the situation on the eastern front, where Ukrainian forces are struggling.

A resident in the capital Kyiv told NHK on Tuesday that Ukrainians have a very strong enemy and that she hopes the changes will be for the better.
