40% of people in Ukraine need humanitarian aid, Ukrainian Red Cross Society says

The Ukrainian Red Cross Society says 40 percent of people in Ukraine are in need of humanitarian aid amid Russia's invasion. But officials have stressed the difficulty of operating in their country.

Officials of the society attended a meeting in Tokyo on Thursday to explain the current situation in Ukraine to members of the Japanese Red Cross Society.

They said eight members of the Ukrainian organization had been killed in the invasion, and 23 of its offices destroyed.

A Ukrainian official expressed hope that students will continue discussions and conversations about Ukraine as part of their effort to support the country.

Ukrainian Red Cross Society Director General Maksym Dotsenko said there is an increasing need to help people in Ukraine. He added that it is very important to maintain people's interest in the country as it remains unclear when the war will end.

A staffer of the Japanese Red Cross Society who took part in the meeting said the agency will do all it can to support those in need.
