Vote counting underway in India's general election

Vote counting is underway in India's general election and is expected to last several hours. Local media, citing exit polls, suggest Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on course to win a majority with his Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance.

The election began in April and was held over seven phases. Roughly 970 million people were eligible to vote, with 543 seats in India's lower house up for grabs.

In the campaign, Modi's ruling BJP was pitted against an opposition alliance centered around the Indian National Congress Party. Economic growth, rampant unemployment and religious divisions were major issues in the election.

A win for the BJP will mean a third term for Modi, who has been in office for ten years. It will make him one of the longest serving leaders of India.
