Japan's Empress Emerita infected with coronavirus

Japan's Imperial Household Agency says Empress Emerita Michiko has been infected with the coronavirus.

The agency says the Empress Emerita has had coughs since early Sunday morning and discomfort in her throat from Monday morning.

She underwent a PCR test, which confirmed that she has been infected with the coronavirus. The agency notes she is recuperating at her Tokyo residence.

It reports the Emperor Emeritus has tested negative for the virus.

The couple visited Nikko in Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo, for four days from Tuesday last week and returned to Tokyo on Friday.
