Fire kills over 20 at entertainment venue in India

A large fire has engulfed an indoor entertainment venue in the western Indian state of Gujarat. Local media outlets say at least 24 people, including children, are dead.

The blaze broke out in the city of Rajkot on Saturday afternoon. It gutted an amusement facility that housed a gaming arcade and other attractions.

Footage shows smoke billowing from the charred site. In the images, people can also be seen clearing away debris and engaging in rescue work.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is from Gujarat. He wrote on social media that he is "extremely distressed" by the fire mishap. He also said, "My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones."

Modi added that local administrators are working to provide all kinds of assistance to those affected.

Police and firefighters are trying to rescue people trapped under the rubble. They are also looking into the cause of the fire.

Local media outlets say the Gujarat government has ordered all gaming zones in the state to suspend operations until officials determine whether they have fire safety measures in place.
