Profile of Iran President Ebrahim Raisi

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi is 63 years old. He is an Islamic law scholar from the northeastern city of Mashhad.

He served as prosecutor general and chief justice in the country's judiciary, which plays a vital role in maintaining the Islamic establishment.

Raisi won the presidential election in June 2021.

He is known as a conservative hardliner and tipped to be one of the potential successors to Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who is 85.

Raisi intensified crackdowns on massive nationwide protests sparked by the death of a 22-year-old woman in police custody in 2022. Mahsa Amini had been arrested for allegedly wearing her headscarf improperly.

Raisi said at the time that his government could not allow people to disturb the peace of society through riots.

Raisi maintains a hardline diplomatic approach toward the United States and European countries.

He supports the Islamic group Hamas in the war in Gaza, adopting an increasingly hostile line against Israel and its backer, the United States.
