Japan's Gifu City recreates 16th century castle with metaverse

The city of Gifu in central Japan is using the metaverse to allow people to virtually visit part of Gifu Castle during the era of the 16th century warlord Oda Nobunaga.

The city launched the service late last month. It is available on its website and the online game Fortnite.

The website recreates Nobunaga's residence and garden, which was located at the foot of a mountain in what is now Gifu Park.

Visitors can compare the virtual castle with the present-day landscape by scanning QR codes with their smartphones.

An online game is available free of charge for registered users. They can take a stroll inside the residence, or talk with characters to get more information.

Officials plan to virtually reproduce the entire castle, including its tower and the view of the surrounding houses, from next April.

They say they hope to attract tourists by promoting the castle to the world through the metaverse.
