Biden notifies Congress of $1 billion arms sale to Israel: US media reports

Multiple US media outlets say the administration of President Joe Biden has notified Congress of its plan to sell more than one billion dollars' worth of arms to Israel.

The package includes tank ammunition and combat vehicles.

The Biden administration announced last week that it was partially holding back delivery of munitions to Israel, to show its opposition to a large-scale ground offensive in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters on Wednesday that the administration has expressed concern over a large-scale operation in Rafah.

But she added that its commitment to Israel's security remains ironclad, and it has always said it will make sure Israel gets whatever it needs to defend itself.

US media point out that the arms sale indicates the Biden administration's reluctance to deepen its divide with Israel over Rafah.
