Building collapses in S.Africa leaving 2 dead and dozens trapped under rubble

A multi-story building under construction has collapsed in South Africa, leaving two workers dead and dozens trapped under the rubble.

The incident occurred in the South African city of George in the country's southwest shortly after 2 p.m. on Monday local time. Many of the 75 construction workers were caught in the collapse.

Local authorities say 22 of them have been rescued and transferred to hospitals, but two were later confirmed dead.

Rescue work continues for the remaining 53 workers who are believed to be trapped under the rubble.

Video from a security camera shows the building suddenly crumbling and a white cloud of dust spreading across the residential area.

Reuters news agency quoted an eyewitness as saying she suddenly heard a loud boom and saw the whole building collapse. The woman said she is traumatized.

City officials and police plan to launch an investigation into the cause while continuing rescue work.
