Explosion occurs at Iraqi militia base

An explosion occurred in Iraq at a military base of an Iran-backed Shia Muslim militia group, raising concerns that it could further destabilize the Middle East.

The group, the Popular Mobilization Forces, announced on social media on Saturday that the blast occurred at the base about 50 kilometers south of the capital Baghdad.

Reuters news agency cited hospital sources as saying one of the group's fighters was killed and six were wounded.

The cause of the blast is not known. But an Iranian media outlet cited Iraqi authorities saying that it was possibly a missile attack.

CNN quoted an Israeli official as saying that Israel had no involvement in the reported explosion.

The US Central Command said on Saturday that the United States has not conducted air strikes in Iraq.

Iran launched a massive attack on Israel a week ago. On Friday, a number of explosions took place in the central part of Iran. US media said it was Israel's retaliation for the Iranian attack.
