G7 foreign ministers discuss air defenses for Ukraine

Foreign ministers from the Group of Seven nations have met in Capri, Italy, on Thursday to discuss support for Ukraine. They invited Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg as guests.

Italy holds the rotating G7 presidency. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said that, if Ukraine loses the war, Russian President Vladimir Putin will "never sit at a peace table." He added that it is their "duty" to help Ukraine "in defense of the values of freedom, democracy and respect for international law."

Kuleba has been asking for help in shoring up air defenses, including Patriot anti-missile systems. He said the G7 has the "capacity" to provide the systems and that the world cannot just "watch Ukrainians being killed by Russian missiles and drones."

Stoltenberg said NATO members are checking their stockpiles to see if they have any systems they can redeploy. He added that he is encouraged that US lawmakers will vote in the "coming days" on a package of over 60 billion dollars for Ukraine.

Japan has provided billions of dollars in humanitarian and other aid. Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko promised more help for Ukraine's "recovery and reconstruction."
