Conference agrees on 10% cut on Pacific saury catch in 2024

Japan and eight other economies have agreed to cut their total catch of Pacific saury. The 10-percent reduction is in effect for this year.

Delegates struck an agreement during a 4-day meeting of the North Pacific Fisheries Commission that wrapped up in Osaka on Thursday.

The new annual limit of members' combined catch is set at 225,000 tons. The quota was decided according to a new rule. Under the method, the level is calculated automatically based on a scientific estimate of saury resources.

The participants say they will allocate caps to each member through negotiations, as was done previously.

Japan's annual saury catches have fallen sharply in recent years. The country's Fisheries Agency says the decline means that curbing the upper limit will not have a major impact on Japanese consumers.
