US, Britain sanction Iranian individuals, entities over massive attack on Israel

The United States and Britain have announced sanctions on Iranian individuals and entities over Tehran's massive missile and drone attack on Israel last weekend.

Iran carried out the attack on Saturday through Sunday, saying it was retaliation for Israel's attack on the Iranian embassy in Syria earlier this month.

The US government said in a statement on Thursday that it is targeting 16 individuals and two entities that enabled the production of Iran's unmanned aerial vehicles. Their property and interests in the US are frozen under the sanctions.

US President Joe Biden said in a statement on Thursday that he consulted with the leaders of the Group of Seven countries following the Iranian attack. He added, "We are committed to acting collectively to increase economic pressure on Iran."

Britain also announced sanctions on Thursday on seven individuals and six entities that it said have enabled Iran's destabilizing activity in the Middle East, including its direct attack on Israel.

The targets include the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy and Iranian company executives. The targeted individuals and entities are subject to an asset freeze.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak described the Iranian attack as "a reckless act and a dangerous escalation." He said in a statement, "Today we have sanctioned the ringleaders of the Iranian military and forces responsible for the weekend's attack."
