Hundreds flee volcano eruption in northern Indonesia

A volcano on the northern Indonesian island of Ruang has erupted following a series of earthquakes. Hundreds of residents have been forced to flee their homes.

Mount Ruang has erupted at least three times since Tuesday. The latest eruption, on Wednesday, sent clouds of ash 3 kilometers into the air. About 800 people live on the island, and many have fled to neighboring Tagulandang.

Authorities have put those who stayed behind on alert and ordered them not to go within 4 kilometers of the crater.

Officials with Japan's Meteorological Agency have been watching for possible tsunami, but they say they have not seen any significant changes in tide levels.
