Solomon Islands' Beijing ties major election issue

People in the Solomon Islands have headed to the polls for a general election.

It took place as China expands its influence in the South Pacific.

Voting to decide 50 seats got underway from 7 a.m. on Wednesday. Polling stations closed later in the day. The final result is expected next week or later.

A major issue is the current administration's pro-Beijing stance. Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan in favor of China in 2019.
He signed a security treaty with Beijing three years later.

Sogavare leads the ruling party. He spent the campaign stressing his achievements, including infrastructure development backed by China.
But the opposition claims his ruling party places too much importance on its relations with Beijing. They called for those ties to be reviewed.

The Solomon Islands is not the only Pacific country to have cut relations with Taiwan to switch allegiance to China. Kiribati did so in 2019. Nauru followed in January.

Taiwan now maintains diplomatic ties with only three island nations in the Pacific: Tuvalu, the Marshall Islands and Palau.
