Sources: Sharp to stop production of some large LCD panels

NHK has learned that Japanese-electronics maker Sharp has decided to stop producing some of its large liquid-crystal displays.

The decision is apparently due to sluggish performance of the company's panel business.

The affected products are made by a subsidiary, Sakai Display Products, based in Osaka Prefecture.

The sources say Sharp has told its suppliers about the plan. It intends to decide on the timing of the suspension in consultation with the companies.

Sharp has said it estimates a net loss of 10 billion yen, or about 65 million dollars, for the fiscal year that ended in March. It logged a huge loss in the previous fiscal year as well.

Sakai Display Products has been losing money on the back of a prolonged downturn in the LCD market.

Sharp is apparently trying to prevent a further worsening of losses through partial production suspensions.
