Tokyo police believe golden teacup thief fled on subway

Police in Tokyo are stepping up their search for a man suspected of stealing a golden teacup worth about 10 million yen, or 65,000 dollars, from a department store. They believe he fled via the subway.

The theft took place on Thursday at Takashimaya's flagship store in the Nihonbashi district.

Police say the suspect seems to be in his 20s to 30s, and wearing glasses.

The teacup was part of an event featuring golden objects. It was inside a showcase, which had not been locked.

Security camera footage shows a man putting the cup into his backpack and leaving.

Police say they have analyzed more security camera footage in the area. They say the man arrived at the event about 10 minutes before stealing the teacup.

They say he is believed to have taken the subway after leaving the department store.
