Tokyo's Ueno Park packed with cherry blossom viewers

Cherry trees of the popular Someiyoshino variety entered full bloom in Tokyo on Thursday.

On Saturday, families and foreign tourists were among those flocking to Ueno Park, where 800 cherry trees of 55 varieties are planted. Many took photos and enjoyed food and drinks.

At Ueno Park, visitors are allowed to walk one-way along the cherry tree path to avoid over-crowding. Picnics are confined to designated areas.

It was the first time in seven years that cherry blossoms in the capital entered full bloom in April.

A man in the park said he is glad to get together with his university friends, who now have more gray hair. He also said that with the full bloom, the timing was perfect.

A woman who came with her colleagues said she is having fun with her boss and seniors, and that the beauty of the flowers makes her want to drink more.
