Extensive damage after Taiwan quake

Taiwan's meteorological agency says the quake occurred off the eastern coast at around 8 a.m. local time Wednesday.

The quake registered an intensity of upper 6 on the Taiwan's seismic scale of zero to 7 in Hualien county. It was a lower 5 in Taipei, New Taipei and the city of Taichung.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says a tsunami with a height of 45 centimeters has hit eastern Taiwan.

A Taiwan TV network says the damage in Hualien county is extensive. It says a disaster medical response team has been dispatched to the area.

Eastern Taiwan has experienced several major earthquakes in recent years. In 2018, a magnitude 6.4 tremor hit the area killing 17 people and injuring more than 290.

Multiple magnitude 6 class quakes struck the area in 2022, leaving one person dead and more than 140 injured in Hualien county.
