Tesla global new car sales drop 1st time in 4 years

US electric vehicle maker Tesla's quarterly new car sales fell for the first time in almost four years amid shipment and production disruptions and declines in US demand growth.

The EV giant announced on Tuesday that it sold 386,810 vehicles worldwide in the first three months of this year, down 8.5 percent from the same period in 2023.

The previous year-on-year sales decline was in the April-to-June period in 2020.

Tesla officials said the company had to reroute ships carrying its cars to avoid attacks by Yemen-based Houthi rebels around the Red Sea.

The officials added that a temporary halt in production at a German factory due to a fire also hurt sales.

The quarterly slump adds to signs growth in demand for EVs in the US is slowing.
