Princess Aiko joins Japanese Red Cross

Japan's Princess Aiko, the daughter of Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, has started working for the Japanese Red Cross Society.

The Princess arrived at the society's headquarters in central Tokyo on Monday morning. She graduated from Gakushuin University last month.

Princess Aiko spoke to reporters after receiving a letter of appointment from the society's president.

The Princess said she was happy to receive the document and warm words from the president. She said she felt a sense of tension as she took her first step as a member of society.

The Princess said she will try to quickly get accustomed to her workplace and be of help to other people.

Princess Aiko also said the Emperor and Empress gave her words of encouragement when she left for her first day at work.

The Princess will work as a contract employee in a section overseeing training and seminars for volunteers, while continuing to perform her Imperial duties.
