Tokyo and surrounding areas treated to summer-like weather

People in Tokyo and surrounding prefectures are enjoying summer-like weather, with temperatures topping 25 degrees Celsius.

Japan's Meteorological Agency says it is shaping up to be warm, fine weather on Sunday in the Kanto-Koshin region, thanks to a high pressure system.

As of 11 a.m., the daytime high had reached 26.5 degrees in the city of Kofu in Yamanashi Prefecture and the town of Yokoshibahikari in Chiba Prefecture. The high in Tokyo's Nerima ward was 26.3. In the city of Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture, the high was 25.9 degrees.

The high in central Tokyo was 25.6 degrees, the highest for the month of March since the agency began keeping such statistics.

Temperatures are expected to rise further in the afternoon. A high of 27 degrees is forecast for central Tokyo and the cities of Kofu and Odawara in Kanagawa Prefecture, as well as the cities of Kumagaya and Chichibu in Saitama Prefecture.

Weather officials are asking people in the region to stay hydrated.
