US Dept. of Homeland Security probing Ohtani's ex-interpreter, ESPN says

US sports channel ESPN says the Department of Homeland Security has confirmed that it is investigating Mizuhara Ippei, the former interpreter for Major League Baseball star Ohtani Shohei.

Mizuhara was dismissed by the Los Angeles Dodgers last week following allegations that he was involved in illegal gambling.

Lawyers for Ohtani have told NHK that he had been the "victim of a massive theft, and we are turning the matter over to the authorities."

ESPN says the department did not specify "whether it was looking into Ohtani's theft allegation or if it had been contacted by Ohtani's representatives."

The US tax authority, the Internal Revenue Service, is also investigating Mizuhara.

ESPN says the department confirmed it is conducting a joint investigation with the IRS.
