Chinese drone spotted over Sea of Japan for 1st time

Japan's Defense Ministry says it has spotted a Chinese military drone flying over the Sea of Japan for the first time.

Ministry officials said the WZ-7 reconnaissance drone was detected on Tuesday morning.

The ministry is keeping a close watch as the Chinese military is believed to be expanding its drones' flight zones.

The aircraft is thought to have first traveled over either Russia or North Korea. It reportedly flew away in the direction of the continent after circling over the Sea of Japan.

Japan's Air Self-Defense Force scrambled fighter jets, but the drone didn't violate Japan's airspace.

The Defense Ministry said Chinese military drones have previously been spotted over areas around Okinawa Prefecture.
