Japanese drugmaker reports death of a person who ingested 'beni-koji'

Major Japanese drugmaker Kobayashi Pharmaceutical says a person who consumed a health supplement subject to a recall has died of kidney disease. The product in question contains Fa type of yeast-fermented rice called "beni-koji."

The Osaka-based firm had recalled products containing the ingredient, following reports of multiple users developing kidney problems after ingesting the supplements.

Kobayashi Pharmaceutical says a causal link is suspected between its product and the death. It is urging people to stop consuming products containing the "beni-koji" red yeast rice.
