Nvidia unveils new AI chip

Major US chipmaker Nvidia has unveiled a new semiconductor to power artificial intelligence and improve its performance.

The announcement came on Monday at the company's developer conference held in San Jose, California.

The new chip is a type of graphic processing unit, or GPU, which is designed for parallel processing.

Compared to conventional products, Nvidia says the new GPU is up to 30 times speedier at producing answers to queries, and 25 times more energy efficient.

The chip is expected to become available in the second half of this year. Leading tech giants, including Amazon, Google and Microsoft, are expected to use it.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said, "Generative AI is the defining technology of our time." He added that the new chip is the "engine to power this new industrial revolution."

Competition to develop a new generation of AI chips is expected to intensify, as their use is rising sharply around the world.
