German govt. predicts mass exodus if Ukraine collapses: Die Welt

German newspaper Die Welt says the German government assumes that around ten million people will leave Ukraine if the country is defeated by Russia.

The newspaper carried the report in its online edition on Saturday, quoting German security sources. It said the vast majority of refugees would head to Western Europe, with Germany being one destination country.

Die Welt also quoted a member of the German parliament as saying the worst-case scenario of a mass exodus from Ukraine and an expansion of the war to NATO states will become much more likely if the support strategy for Ukraine is not changed.

The paper noted the importance of European countries stepping up military support for Ukraine as it is becoming unclear whether the US will continue to provide assistance.
