Argentinian soccer superstar Lionel Messi said he is looking forward to his team's friendly match in Japan. But he noted that he is unsure if he can actually play, due to some muscle pain. The comments came two days after his no-show at a match in Hong Kong. His failure to appear over the weekend angered thousands of fans.
Messi is in Japan for the game between US Major League Soccer's Inter Miami and the J-League's Vissel Kobe. The game will take place at the Japan National Stadium in Tokyo on Wednesday.
Messi told reporters on Tuesday that he is happy to be in Japan again. He said he knows about Vissel, as his friend Andres Iniesta played for the team. The Argentinian star said he hopes everyone will enjoy the match.
Regarding the adductor muscle pain he felt during a friendly match in Saudi Arabia last month, Messi said he is feeling much better than he was a few days ago. But he said he does not know if he can play on Wednesday.
Messi said it was unfortunate that he could not take to the field in Hong Kong because he wanted to participate. He added that he hopes to have another opportunity to play in Hong Kong.
Later on Tuesday, Messi practiced near Tokyo with his Inter Miami teammates. He did not appear to be having any visible issues with his legs.
The match between Inter Miami and Vissel Kobe is scheduled to kick off at 7:00 p.m., local time.
