Iran has defeated Japan in the quarterfinal of the Asian Cup soccer championship now underway in Qatar.
The world's 21st-ranked Iran faced off with 17th -ranked Japan on Saturday.
Twenty-eight minutes into the game, Japan's Morita Hidemasa scored the opening goal. The first half ended with Japan leading 1-0.
Iran's squad, which boasts strong offensive ability, began to control the game from the start of the second half. The team used fast passes to equal the score in the 55th minute.
Late in the game, Iran was awarded a penalty after Japan's Itakura Kou tumbled an Iranian player.
Iran made the most of the chance to secure a 2-1 victory.
Japan was aiming to win its 5th Asian Cup title, but fell short of reaching the semifinal.
