Fire department officials say they received reports about an explosion and smoke rising at Taketoyo Thermal Power Station shortly after 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

The power plant's operator, Jera, said smoke was detected in the boiler area and a fire was discovered on a belt conveyor carrying coals and other fuels.

Firefighters had most of the blaze under control at 6:30 p.m.
