US technology company OpenAI, which developed the generative artificial intelligence system ChatGPT, has announced the departure of its CEO Sam Altman.
The company's board of directors said on Friday that chief technology officer Mira Murati was appointed the interim CEO.
The company said that, following a review, the board concluded that Altman was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities.
The company added that the board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.
Altman founded the company together with Elon Musk in 2015 and led the development of generative AI.
In November last year, the company released ChatGPT. It rapidly grew popular globally as users found the chatbot generated very natural answers to their questions.
The sudden departure of the head of OpenAI could affect the development and future of generative AI.
