China building fire kills at least 26 in Shanxi Province

A fire at a coal company building in the northern Chinese province of Shanxi has killed at least 26 people.

State-run media say the fire broke out on Thursday morning in the four-story building. Thirty-eight others were injured.

The fire is believed to have started in a bathroom on the second floor.

President Xi Jinping, who is on a trip to the United States, called for all-out efforts to rescue survivors and treat the injured. He urged officials to determine the cause of the fire and pursue those responsible.

Safety management has been an issue in China.

In April, a hospital fire in Beijing killed 29 people. The fire erupted after sparks from renovation work ignited painting material.
